Ativan (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine that is used to treat anxiety. It works by affecting the central nervous system so the body can become calmer. Ativan (Lorazepam) has also been known to treat other conditions such as insomnia yet usually its primary function is to treat anxiety. Does Ativan (Lorazepam) have side effects? Ativan (Lorazepam) does have side effects like other medications. However, many of the side effects are not serious and they discontinue after a couple of days. But, if you experience any of the side effects that are listed below you should let your doctor know immediately. - Memory loss - Shaking - Slurred speech - Blurred vision - Depression or thoughts or suicide start occurring - Trouble breathing - Yellowing of your eyes and skin - Your urine becomes dark - You experience seizures - You start bruising and bleeding easier than normal - Sore throat occurs - Weakness - Low body temperate - Swelling of your face, tongue and throat There may be more symptoms that you need to look out for as well so make sure that you discuss the serious side effects with your doctor so you know what to look out for. It is very rare that these side effects will occur but just in case you will want to be prepared. However, as long as you are taking your directed dosage you have a lesser chance of being affected with these side effects. Also, to decrease your chance of experiencing any of the side effects listed above be sure that you tell your doctor about your existing and past medical conditions. Also, be sure to tell them about any medications you may be currently taking including, prescription, over the counter drugs, vitamins and herbal treatment. The reasoning is because some medications are not compatible with Ativan (Lorazepam).
